People of World Peace and Prosperity

The time has now come for a New Political Beginning.

Humanity is about to advance in a way that will enable us to live in peace and prosperity.  Taking that step is not just possible, our history demonstrates beyond all reasonable doubt that it is inevitable, and that it will lead to new levels of freedom, dignity and opportunity.  This step will transform the world and make work, food and water available to everyone, everywhere.  It will lead to health and education, to the freedom for each to rear his* family in a clean environment with an eco-friendly energy supply.  It will also give us the freedom to travel and live in any country of our choice.  The step we are about to take is very practical and becomes extremely obvious as we glance through our history.

     * Terms such as "mankind", "man" and "he" used in this paper refer equally to both genders.  It is hoped that it will not cause offence.

We have come from a caveman-like existence, where small gatherings of people lived and cared for one another in groups.  These groups and their territories grew larger and larger.  They lived as clans or tribes and eventually as nations and their mindset was “we are good, we will protect ourselves and look after one another”.  However, surrounded as they were by enemies who were prepared to kill them, they had no choice other than to kill in order to protect themselves.  It was a question of kill or be killed.

The history of mankind is the story of these groups fighting and killing, and growing into ever larger and larger groups, living to some degree in harmony among themselves, but always at war with the other – the enemy.  Their armies grew larger and larger and so did their battles and wars.  The 20th century suffered two conflicts which were world-wide in magnitude.  Our groups have become so big that we are running out of enemies and our bombs so destructive that not only might they destroy the enemy they may well destroy the one who unleashes them.

Human history is the story of these people uniting into ever larger groups, and struggling for justice and advancement.  Legions of people have fought and millions have died in pursuit of justice and in an insatiable quest to improve the human condition.  The road to what has been achieved thus far has been long, agonising and bloody, but humanity, in spite of its difficulties, and not withstanding the injustices that still exist, is advancing.  The progress of the human race has been a relentless chain of innumerable peaks and troughs, with a predisposition towards advancement.  Time and again humanity's fortunes have appeared to be waning, yet despite appearances it has continued to grow, elevating itself, and moving generally in an upward direction.  Over and over, man-made structures or systems which were deemed to be undesirable were superseded by more appropriate ones.  History corroborates this fact.  Brevity allows but a few examples: the elimination of the feudal system, the abolition of slavery, the elimination of males only having the right to vote, and the ending of the apartheid system.

All these systems were, in their day, viewed by the vast majority to be unavoidable and therefore lasting; believing as they did that these represented a permanent mode of behaviour which simply manifested the human condition.  At first only a tiny minority of people recognised that these were not permanent but rather temporary, yet inevitable developments along the slow evolutionary trail.  The eradication of these systems was both achievable and desirable and so each in turn was ousted due to man's desire to improve.  Nothing ever remains the same, everything is evolving.  Now in our time, we too, view certain current conditions as inescapable and lasting, like for example war, poverty and unemployment.  Is it not possible that these too, like the apartheid system and the others mentioned, are transient and simply an unavoidable development in humanity's struggle, as it moves towards maturity?

Our history has been one of fighting to survive, and so all the emphasis has centred on being big, strong and powerful, for it was such people and nations who survived and ruled.  Their rule was based on being strong and powerful and so it is hardly surprising that primitive attitudes relating to power still linger to this present day.  There are obvious historic reasons why almost all nations, races, religions and peoples have considered themselves superior.  The use of a “might is right” approach to solving problems, has only aggravated the difficulties and has resulted in a strong sense of injustice, frustration and anger throughout the world.  Understandably there are some people who have been consumed by this injustice and frustration, it could not but be otherwise considering how mankind has evolved.

Phenomenal advancements have taken place recently, and over the past hundred years or so.  The most extraordinary and important of these has undoubtedly been the evolution in mankind’s consciousness.  Although less tangible than technological advancements, it is very real.  Consider how justice, democracy and equality have evolved over the last century; today, the majority of people accept others regardless of colour, nationality or creed.  Nowadays, people want to live and let live.  Compared to the early 20th century and previous centuries these attitudes are quite astounding.

We have arrived at a higher level of understanding, we now accept the equal status of men and women, of black and white, and we have learned to respect the equal status of each race and of all people.  We have arrived at a new level of democracy, where we accept the rights of all       nations.  Few individuals now think in terms of inferior or superior people, races, nations, or even religions.  People in this day and age think of themselves as equals among others.  What an incredible transformation has taken place.

Although we human beings have a sense of morality, historically we have, to some degree, behaved a little like animals, who, lacking a sense of morality, are lead by their base instinct and act correspondingly, each according to its character – the lion and the hawk will kill, the lamb and the dove won’t – the cuckoo will steal a nest, while the swallow will build its own.  The strength, agility and aggression of the lion make him the king of the jungle, and the law of the jungle is that the physically strong dominate over the weak.  So likewise men dominated over women – it’s less than a hundred years since we established the right for women to vote.  White men enslaved black men, women and children, our animalistic tendencies institutionalised slavery and much more besides.  Unfortunately, the negative side of man has dominated the affairs of mankind throughout recorded history.  The strong and powerful, politically, economically and militarily, have always dominated over the weak, and they still do.

However, man’s moral sense has evolved to such a degree that many types of behaviour, once considered normal, are now becoming more and more distasteful and so most people now desire to move away from the age-old practice of one dominating over the other; male over female, white over black, employer over employee, one political party over another.  We have evolved to a state where this is no longer acceptable; in fact it is quite repugnant.  The idea that man’s political and economic organisation and institutions are based on his lower nature is becoming increasingly unacceptable and intolerable. The idea that so much is based on our base instinct is becoming more offensive as we increasingly recognise that they are the cause of a long list of our most serious problems: War, Extreme Poverty, Growing Unemployment, Global Warming, Terrorism, Genocide, Displacement of Millions of People, unfortunately the list continues, Famine, Disease – especially Aids, Child Labour, Chaos in Global Economy, Lack of Regulation and Transparency in the Banking System, it continues, Debt out of Control, Drug Trafficking, Lawlessness,  A Lack of Education, Food and Water –– truly the list could go on and on.

Do we really want 60% of the people of the world to earn less than 10% of what is earned?           I don’t think so.  Do we want to spend hundreds of billions on armies and on 36,000 nuclear bombs to protect us from the “enemy”?  The enemy is our base instinct.  Organising ourselves on the basis of our lower nature is verging on insanity, it is primitive, it is very destructive, uncaring and extremely dangerous, even to the extent that it threatens the life of each and every one of us, as well as the planet itself.  Do we really want to continue along this road?

Throughout history and right up until now almost everything has been organised on the basis of our primitive tribal past.  This has established the foundation upon which we live our lives, it has created a “way of being” – a “system” with very powerful institutions and structures.  Having been around for so long, these are more controlling and infinitely more powerful than any living person or political party.  This “system” is a reflection of man’s lower nature, and its shape, if it has one, is pyramid.  One might say it is made in the image and likeness of our lower nature.  It wants us to believe that we live in a democratic world, and most of us do believe it, simply because we choose the leaders on top.  The world is under its sway.  Political leaders and political parties have little or no control over it.  Many blame our politicians, but the solution lies far beyond their control, it’s not their fault, it’s the fault of the system.  The system is controlling almost every aspect of our lives – our job, our house, our health, our education, our supply or lack of supply of food, water and energy.  It is absolutely imperative and infinitely wiser that we control the system, instead of it controlling us and our politicians.  Real democracy is about us, together, managing a just, mutual arrangement that benefits everyone, based on those principles that we universally hold such as Justice, Democracy and the Equal Status of all People.  The time has now come for us to do this, and the way to do it, is for us to focus, not on our lower, but on our higher nature.

Deep down at the very core of our being, each one of us has a deep-seated tendency to grow, and create; to climb higher and to dig deeper; to go further and do better.  We want to develop systems and advance wherever possible; we want to seek what is good, better and more just in order to improve ourselves individually and collectively.  Anything that can be achieved will be achieved, if it is desirable; after all, most of our problems are simply symptoms of our tribal fears and impulse to dominate.  The human race is endowed with extraordinary capacity and creativity, and with amazing qualities.  We simply need to focus on these and on the beauty of our astounding diversity of talents and cultures, of colours, customs, languages and traditions.  It is unwise to see these differences as a problem, they are an opportunity, for the mood of the age is one of unity in diversity.  Just as the diversity of flowers in a garden increases its beauty, so too is humanity’s beauty and capacity increased by the extraordinary diversity of its peoples, such diversity must be encouraged.  We need to be constructive and build on these talents and on our willingness to cooperate.

One dominating over another has never, and will never bring peace and prosperity; cooperation will.  By changing ourselves, we can change our world and allow it to move in the direction we want to go.  A great deal will be gained by focusing on what is positive, and on internationally held principles.  Mankind is about to take that step and recognise his higher nature and the practical advantages of ordering his life and the life of human society on it, and on those principles that we universally hold, such as Justice, Democracy  and Equal Status.  Totally based on cooperation we can reorganise the affairs of mankind by forming an International Assembly based on moral standards, whose authority will come from the will of the majority of the citizens of planet Earth.  The Representatives will exercise that authority democratically by coming to all decisions based on a majority vote among all the Representatives, indeed being based on cooperation we, the people of the world, can and will design the Assembly to be the way we want it to be.  National Governments will remain autonomous, independent and sovereign, under the umbrella and protection of our International Assembly, and with as little intrusion into their affairs as possible.

The following is a wonderful example of how global cooperation can and will work, in this instance, creating meaningful employment for everyone, everywhere:-  Because of the ever-increasing quantity and sophistication of machines, companies throughout the world are decreasing the number of people they employ each year relative to their turnover.  Instead of allowing this ratio to decrease, the Assembly will increase it until everyone in the world is employed.  Due to automation and to this arrangement we will all spend less time at work and without any loss in what we earn.  It will not cost employers anything extra as the amount of social insurance that they paid will be reduced proportionately to compensate for the larger workforce.  The loss of revenue to the state will be balanced by increases from other revenues.  Such an obvious amendment to our “way of being” is not rocket science, it’s simply common sense, but the consequences are absolutely mind boggling.  This is but one example of how the principle of cooperation can and will benefit every individual, company and government in the world.

Building political and economic institutions and structures based on morals or principles, has unimaginable potential.  Sure, some people will think that all this is too good to be true, or even that we don’t deserve it.  But surely we do; humanity has suffered enough war, poverty and degradation, now the time and the possibility has come for us to live in peace.  Enough people have starved to death, we have killed enough people in battle, we have used enough bombs and bullets; enough is enough.

It is sad but totally understandable that our institutions developed the way they did, we would do well to understand and accept that fully, and then move on, for these institutions are no longer fit for purpose; everything has changed, and most of all, we now care and respect one another more than ever before.  According to psychology, caring for others as much as we care for ourselves is emotional maturity, OK, we’re not there yet, but we are getting closer and closer.  This caring and respecting is Justice, and this Justice creates Unity – a brotherhood of mankind, and this brotherhood or sisterhood will create world peace.  This is the step that we are about to take, and when we do, the Assembly will declare world peace. It will create full employment, provide food and water for the destitute, it will eliminate poverty, transfer wealth from the richest countries to those in most need, just as they have done in Europe.  The Assembly will transform the health situation throughout the planet; it will improve the environment and upgrade working conditions.  In time, it will overcome all of the major international problems, and create an atmosphere of cooperation that will make this world a better place for all to live.  This new cooperation between the people of the world will ensure that all are empowered to develop, not just in a material or economic sense, but socially, educationally, emotionally and spiritually, as we search to live life more fully, in peace with ourselves and in harmony with others.

No doubt some will argue that all this is too idealistic.  Ridding ourselves of slavery and the apartheid system was also idealistic.  Yes, it is idealistic, but it is also practical, achievable and desirable, and besides, the alternative is unimaginably dangerous.  And yes, it may be met with cynicism and even ridicule but as it is examined and understood it will become manifestly clear that this alternative is infinitely better than what exists.  It is mind boggling, it is extremely difficult to believe, but it is true; our attitude to everything is changing – we are adopting a truly positive mindset, and we will use it as the new foundation upon which to establish peace and prosperity with a 21st century understanding of how we can be.

Initially, there may well be some people, or groups of people, or maybe even governments, who may be opposed to such an undertaking, for some leaders may well believe that the “old way” is better for them and that it should be maintained for "their people”.  Unfortunately, there are still some who believe that their nation, race or religion is superior and that it should be treated as such.  However, the promise of peace and prosperity will hopefully encourage all people, companies, nations and governments of good will to come together to create a new beginning for mankind, so that together we can go on evolving into the future just as we have evolved in the past.

In reality, deep down in many peoples’ psyche there is a fear or dread of global organisation.  There is the understandable anxiety that something might go wrong; in books and in movies it always does, and the planet ends up being governed by an evil force, or by some form of autocracy.  This will not happen because we will give ourselves the authority to change anything we don’t like, with a majority vote in a referendum.  Nevertheless, doing something new or unknown causes anxiety, the solution lies in fully understanding all of the extraordinary advantages of true democracy.  We have arrived at the threshold of maturity, we need to be sensitive and to gently carry one another over the threshold and establish an Assembly based on Justice, Unity and Equality, that will carry us safely into the future and to ways that are unimaginably beautiful.

Let each of us decide in a practical and fair-minded way if this will be good for us, for our children, and for future generations.  Changing humanity means changing ourselves, so let us in the name of all that is good, prove our maturity, accept the reality of our equal status, and choose to live in peace and in harmony.  While accepting our lower nature as a part of our reality, let us centre our lives and institutions on our higher nature, and on principles that will guarantee an ever-advancing civilization.

Planet Earth is our home, we all belong here, and we have a responsibility to look after it, and to care for one another.  We all share this tiny planet, and we all have an inalienable democratic right to determine our own future.  Nobody can deny us of this right, this is our right, this is our responsibility, and this is our privilege.  Let us then come together and exercise that right, responsibility and privilege, initially in small groups and then as one human family, and let our leaders be the principles of our higher nature.

So how do we get from where we are, to where we want to be?  All it takes is goodwill, and the world has millions upon millions of people of goodwill, and also companies and organizations, who when they hear about this plan, will embrace it with open arms.  The idea therefore is to unite this goodwill, this concern, this creative capacity and energy so that it grows and grows and like a magnet it will draw others to it uniting the hearts of the people of the world.  One World Our World – which is everybody, will coordinate this life-giving energy, and together we will celebrate our coming together, our unity, and all that is positive about it.  We will celebrate our desire for justice, unity and peace, we will celebrate our victory, humanity’s victory, for, although it hasn’t arrived yet, we know that this life-giving positive idea will establish itself and triumph in the form of our International Assembly.  We will all find our own unique way to celebrate.   We will not coerce others to join; we will simply enjoy the privilege of helping to make this world more human.  We will love our new “way of being”, we will love being who we are, we will love those who have joined us and those who haven’t, for in time, the darkness of our past will pass away, and together, hopefully by 11-11-11, Armistice Day, and now, One World Our World Day, humanity will be well on its way to basking in the glory of being truly human.

Deep down at the very core of our being each will celebrate this new positive “way of being”, each in their own way, in their own home, school, place of work, or community.  Together we will breathe new life into ourselves and into the wider community which will encourage more and more to reach out.  For the vast majority of the ordinary people of this war-weary world want a new beginning.  And yes a New Day is dawning, a new “way of being” – and it will be desired by politicians and non-politicians alike; all reasonable and fair-minded people will welcome it.  Everyone is yearning to find a “way out” of our dilemma; a solution is being sought after by everybody, by our ecologists and economists, by our newspaper editors and television presenters, by pastors and poets, pop stars and film stars.  We will find it within ourselves in a new faith and optimism in humanity as we live in hope and in tolerance.  This will generate an enthusiasm as we move forward in confidence, uniting the world, one heart at a time.  Let none of us dwell on what cannot be done, let us rather focus on what we can do, and reach out to those of  like mind,  and join with them to unite humanity and see our dream, of World Peace and dignity, come true.  Yes, we will celebrate each and every victory.  There will be no “them” and “us”, just humanity as a whole as we move slowly but surely towards embracing this life-giving idea, and together we will make it a reality.

The goodwill, combined with the many practical and material advantages, such as full employment will attract a great number of people.  Editors and journalists have a pivotal role to play.  They have the great honour and responsibility of presenting as much information as possible, in a way that will ensure that most people understand the importance of this inspirational yet practical idea of an International Assembly.  Recognising and understanding the value of the gems and jewels latent within the International Assembly will create a ground-swell in public opinion.  This ground-swell will grow as people from all nations, from all political parties, from all sections of humanity, come together in unity, and in excitement – and join in a spirit of justice and peace, creating a tidal wave of enthusiasm for this new Assembly that will ennoble us, and enable us to forge the shape of our own destiny, through our own Representatives.  This enthusiasm will create a yearning for change that will spread from country to country until it reaches a crescendo and envelopes the entire globe, transforming our desire for peace and prosperity into reality.  This will lead us, humanity, to the two democratic phases that we need to participate in to reach our goal.

Phase One

The wisdom of choosing this new “way of being” will be adopted, desired and taken on board by more and more people from every section of society, including butchers, bakers and motorcar makers, and also by our politicians.  In all local, national and international elections we will choose candidates (no matter what political party they belong to) who share our desire to live this new “way of being” under the shelter and protection of our own International Assembly.  We will start immediately and continue to do this until a generous majority of the Members of Parliament in the world are in favour of this plan.  When this happens, that generous majority will give us, the people of the world, a very clear mandate to move on to Phase Two.

Phase Two

The people of each country in the world will elect one to four people depending on the size of its population; those candidates will come from that country and will, hopefully, have earned a reputation for their wisdom and concern.  When elected they will act as a voice for the people of the world, but also as a voice for the spirit of their nation, and as a voice for the government of their country, for this is part of mankind’s on-going evolution, it’s not a revolution; presently the institutions and structures (including our nuclear bombs) are in the hands of governments.  The elected Representatives will form an Assembly on behalf of the people and governments of the world and declare World Peace.  Having been elected, the Assembly will spend a short but adequate amount of time preparing a “Package Deal” which will bestow Justice on each and every person, on both genders, on every nation, race, religion, culture, colour, class, company and government in the world.  The Assembly will then present the treaty or agreement to us, the citizens of Planet Earth. If we, the people, endorse it, then, and only then, will the Assembly begin to legislate.

There can be no doubt whatsoever but that the step of choosing to build our lives and institutions on all that is positive is the foundation stone of a new world civilization.  Therefore, let us, the children, teenagers, women and men of Planet Earth, unite together and take ownership of our own planet, and ownership of its management, and ownership of the suffering on it, and ownership of this plan to end that suffering.  Let humanity’s suffering be our suffering, let this Assembly be our Assembly, let each of us, for the sake of humanity, come together and transform our world.  Let there be universal participation in this honour of creating world peace, so that the overwhelming majority of mankind may embrace it, thus ensuring a smooth transition from the old world to a new peaceful and just one.  Let us, let all of us, choose this infinitely better alternative - of fairness-for-all.  In the name of God, or in the name of reason, or in the name of common sense, or in the name of compassion, let us, at this time, in this 21st century, create a new epoch in human history – representing Mankind's coming of Age, and together we will transform this battlefield for survival, into a peaceful rose garden of tolerance and dignity.
